SNORING: IT IS A PROBLEM WORTH SOLVING
It is estimated that up to 50% of adults have snoring disorders. Snoring is such a common problem; people tend to under-rate its seriousness. Disrupted sleep on an ongoing basis can lead to relationship problems and affect the physical well-being of both the partner and especially the SNORER. Snoring not only robs you of the rest you need, it also robs those closest to you. You both wake up tired, and often feel irritable and sluggish during the day. The problem is that almost 75% of people that snore are at risk of having undiagnosed OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea). If you snore... YOU SHOULD BE TESTED.
What is OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea)?
Most people with sleep apnea snore. The airway at the back of your throat collapses and causes you to gasp for air and choke. When the air collapses, the brain senses the emergency and will yank the unsuspecting sufferer out of their sleep just to kick-start breathing again. As a result the person might snort, snore, choke or gasp for air. These sleep and awakening cycles can occur hundreds of times all night long without the sufferer even being aware of it. This leads to severe sleep deprivation and lack o oxygen to the brain. There is mild, moderate and severe OSA. For severe apnea a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine is worn when sleeping to keep your airway open. Mild and moderate cases can be treated with a removable appliances that is worn when sleeping. If you have tried a CPAP machine and failed we now have appliances that may help you.
Who is at risk? If you snore... YOU ARE AT RISK.
Sleep apnea can occur at any age, but most victims fall into the middle age and older groups. Recent studies report that almost 75% of adults that snore and are 50 or older have a high risk of suffering from this disorder and should be tested. It often goes undiagnosed and untreated until other health problems occur. Going night after night without sleep puts extraordinary stress on the cardiovascular system. Lack of sleep has also been linked to premature death. The daytime sleepiness caused by the sleep deprivation can lead to automobile accidents and other dangerous incidents.
Physical effects of OSA
Besides increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure and diabetes compromised immune system, sleep apnea is a key in getting these and other disorders under control or completely eliminated. For example, impaired brain function, gastric reflux, diabetes, as well as being overweight can sometimes be completely reversed just by getting a good night's sleep. Not to mention the person next to you that probably is also losing sleep from your snoring and suffering from sleep deprivation as well.
What can you do?
If you snore or know someone that does, you need to schedule a short appointment and have a simple screening test to see if you have OSA. Perhaps all you need is an appliance to help eliminate your nocturnal snoring. Without testing you can never be sure.
